Dr Christiana Stavrou ST6 Dermatology Registrar

My BSMD fellowship was an extremely valuable experience, with a specific focus on connective tissue and autoinflammatory diseases. During the fellowship, I had the opportunity to attend a range of subspecialist clinics and multidisciplinary meetings. I am very grateful to the BSMD and to the clinicians listed below for welcoming me into their busy clinical services.

Clinics and meetings attended:

1. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust – Joint lupus clinic with Dr Thomas Tull and Dr Emma Benton; Immunobullous clinic with Dr Richard Groves and Dr Thomas Tull

2. Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust – Connective tissue disease/morphoea clinic with Dr Cate Orteu; Autoinflammatory multidisciplinary team meeting and clinic with Dr Helen Lachmann

3. Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Behçet’s multidisciplinary team clinic with Professor Moots

4. King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – Dermatomyositis clinic with Dr Creamer

5. Advanced Medical Dermatology Meeting 2024, British Society for Medical Dermatology, Royal College of Physicians

6. European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress 2024, Amsterdam

Attendance at these clinics and meetings provided a valuable integration of theoretical knowledge delivered at national and international meetings with first-hand clinical experience. This included direct exposure to specialist clinical assessment, multidisciplinary decision-making, and novel therapeutic approaches for complex medical dermatological conditions. The fellowship also enabled the development of professional networks. As a newly appointed consultant with a special interest in medical dermatology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, I intend to apply the knowledge and experience gained during this fellowship to my clinical practice and patient care.
